Bridging the Gap Between High School and College

Understanding the Transition

The leap from high school to college is one of the biggest shifts a student will face — academically, emotionally, and socially.

In high school:

  • There’s daily structure and frequent check-ins.

  • Teachers often initiate support.

  • Caregivers are regularly involved in communication and planning.

  • Accommodations are guided by IEPs or 504 plans.

In college:

  • Students are expected to manage their own schedules, deadlines, live with strangers, and make friends.

  • Professors may not check in if a student falls behind.

  • Support services exist, but students must request them.

  • Family involvement is limited due to privacy laws (FERPA).

This shift can leave many students — and caregivers — feeling uncertain, underprepared, or overwhelmed.
That’s where Everest comes in.
