Understanding the Transition
The leap from high school to college is one of the biggest shifts a student will face — academically, emotionally, and socially.
In high school:
- There’s daily structure and frequent check-ins.
- Teachers often initiate support.
- Caregivers are regularly involved in communication and planning.
- Accommodations are guided by IEPs or 504 plans.
In college:
- Students are expected to manage their own schedules, deadlines, live with strangers, and make friends.
- Professors may not check in if a student falls behind.
- Support services exist, but students must request them.
- Family involvement is limited due to privacy laws (FERPA).
This shift can leave many students — and caregivers — feeling uncertain, underprepared, or overwhelmed.
That’s where Everest comes in.
