College Process

Recommendations

For college bound seniors, your college application will likely require a recommendation letter from a guidance counselor and another writer of your choice (typically a teacher who knows you well!). You also might need a letter of recommendation for possible internships, job applications, or scholarships.

Tips on How to Request a Recommendation Letter

Choose Who to Ask

Choose a teacher who knows you well and can help share insight into your work, student skills, and personality.

Ask in Person
Once you decide who you would like to write your letter of recommendation, it is important to ask the writer in person. This can be an anxiety inducing moment but your teachers are expecting to be asked for help with this and they want to support you! Try to give your writer as much notice as possible but a minimum of two weeks is necessary and preferably a month or two months notice.

Follow up with a Written Response
After you have made your request in person it is important to send a follow up email with the details of your request. The email should of course start with a thank you and then include the following information:

  • What the application is for (college, job, scholarship etc)
  • Any requirements the letter must include
  • How to submit the recommendation letter
  • When the recommendation is due
  • Any specific project or assignment you want them to discuss

Send a Thank You Once it is Completed!
It is always nice to send a thank you note to anyone who wrote a recommendation letter for you, sharing your appreciation for their help and support.
